I have been thinking lately about my church and how it tends to be unbiblical at times. Actually I like everything about it except how they view the "dones del Espiritu" (gifts of the Spirit). Since my church is very charismatic, there are people there that burst into uncontrollable convulsions and fall to the floor. So, I just did a quick search in my bible search utility on the word "convulsions" and here's what came up:
Luke 9:42-43
As the boy was approaching, the demon threw him to the ground and shook him with convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. Then they were all astonished at the mighty power of God.
Translator's notes: See L&N 23.167-68, where the second verb συσπαράσσω (susparassw) is taken to mean the violent shaking associated with the convulsions, thus the translation here “and shook him with convulsions.”
Mark 1:23-26
Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, 1:24 “Leave us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God!” 1:25 But Jesus rebuked him: “Silence! Come out of him!” 1:26 After throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.
Mark 9:25-27
Now when Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 9:26 It shrieked, threw him into terrible convulsions, and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He is dead!” 9:27 But Jesus gently took his hand and raised him to his feet, and he stood up.
It's funny how at my church they see falling to the floor in convulsions as "anointing of the Holy Spirit". I'm kinda glad it's never happened to me.
